Firstly, I have to admit that I have a love/hate relationship with anthologies. As a kid (and a newbie to horror literature) I loved them. I was introduced to tons of great writers, all in one reading experience. It was also a great way to discover the different writing styles that the genre had to offer. Nowadays, I read them less often. I have twenty-five plus years of reading horror with approximately two thousand horror novels read under my belt, so I have a slightly diminished need to discover new writers. However, I still feel the "thrill of the hunt" when reading anthologies, and I have discovered a few gems in Dig Two Graves. 

In this twenty-two story revenge-themed anthology, there were two stories that rose above the rest: "Samantha" by Jeremy Megargee, and "Cooter" by Ken Goldman. "Samantha" is a uniquely-crafted, reverse Faustian story, and "Cooter" is like a cross between The Omen and Marley and Me. Both are absolutely stellar.

The other standouts from the collection include:

"Head" by Duncan Ralston

"A Little Respect" by Thomas Gunther

"The Six O'clock" by DJ Tyrer

"The Forgiven Ghost in Me" by Feind Gottes

The rest of the stories in the collection were rated on a quality spectrum of above average to poor.  Next up is Dig Two Graves Vol.2.
