[Review] - The Possession of Natalie Glasgow
The Possession of Natalie Glasgow is the debut novella from Hailey Piper, and what a debut it is. I love possession/haunted house stories. However, this is a genre that can become stale at times, with so many stories and ideas being rehashed. Piper manages to breathe new life into this sub-genre of horror with a unique take on what could be the cause of a haunting.
Heather, Natalie’s mother, has brought in Margaret Willow to try and figure out what exactly is going on inside her daughter. What follows is a tense, anxiety packed story that I couldn’t finish fast enough.
We begin this story by being placed in the later stages of the haunting. Natalie roams the halls at night time, forcing her mother to lock herself in her own bed room, fearing what may happen if she leaves.
The opening of this book is exceptionally creepy. I was immediately sucked in from the get go and that feeling never lets you go until you reach the shocking conclusion. My only (small) gripe with this story is that I wish there was more backstory on all of the characters. Especially Margaret and her past endeavours. I would gladly spend more time with her should Piper decide to do a sequel or spin-off with her.
