[Review] - Your House Will Pay

Your House Will Pay

My favorite part of this book was the the final scene, not necessarily what happens with the story, but the imagery of what is transpiring all around our main characters. There is a bit of peace in an otherwise wild scene of destruction and disarray. As a white man living in a fairly isolated rural setting, I tend to forget about all the racism that exists in this world between races outside of my own. I guess for lack of a better way of putting it, that was fresh. It was fresh to consume a story about racial tension between the Black and Korean community.

There was something at work in this book where even while these characters are existing in a tragic situation full of interesting social commentary, I had a hard time just sitting back and observing. It may have all been intentional, but it is hard to pick a side. There are two definite sides in this book, the African American side of the story and the Korean American side. There are feelings and emotions pulled from the reader on both sides of that, but my ability to connect with the characters or to latch on to one point of view seemed to be negatively impacted.

The reveals in this book are supposed to be earth shattering. There are points in this book where you are supposed to be shocked when certain things come to light. Those things just didn't come off that way for me. I found it fairly predictable.

It's a good book, it's a really good book. It came with some really big buzz and thus expectations which I feel always negatively impacts a book for me. That's not the book's fault.
