Five Christmas Horror Movies: The Great, The Good, and the Downright Terrible

Gremlins (1984) ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Okay, let’s start with a “family favourite” that’s both silly and jump-scary in equal measure. Dad brings home a cute lil’ creature that multiplies when wet and turns homicidal when fed after midnight. Of course, his teenage son doesn’t look after it properly and before you know it, the town is teeming with gremlins. A top-notch seasonal creature-feature. To this day I can’t hear “Do You Hear What I Hear?” without wanting to arm myself with a kitchen knife.

Slay Belles (2018) ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Three women, in Christmas cosplay, accidentally summon Krampus on Christmas Eve and must team up with Santa to defeat the evil beast and save the world. I mean, come on, is that not the best plot you’ve ever read? It’s a ridiculous, cheesy, festive B-movie slasher, and all the better for it.

A Christmas Horror Story (2015) ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Four interwoven hellish holiday stories as told by radio host, William “overacting” Shatner. Krampus goes to town on a dysfunctional family; another family pay a hefty price for stealing a Christmas tree; a found-footage story tells the story of three teens trapped in a haunted school; and a heavy-hitting Santa Claus faces off against evil, zombie elves. An above-average piece of festive fair.

Jack Frost (1997) ⭐️ ⭐️

No, not the weepy, PG rated one where Michael Keaton comes back to life as a snowman, but the R rated one where a serial killer comes back to life as a snowman. And does lots of brutal, serial killer things. It’s sick, twisted and rather lacking in plot. A bit like a Christmas-themed Troma movie...

The Gingerdead Man (2005) ⭐️

Umm... so, Gary Busey (who I can only assume lost a bet or something) plays a homicidal serial killer gingerbread man with an utterly foul mouth who does a lot of utterly foul things. It’s complete garbage, with a few crumbs of black comedy. What is hilarious, however, is IMDb describing it as a tale of “an evil yet adorable Gingerbread man”... okay then.
