Audiobook Review: “My Sister, the Serial Killer, by Oyinkan Braithwaite, with Weruch Opia

My Sister, the Serial Killer

Oyinkan Braithwaite, narrated by Weruche Opia

A story about two sisters, and the unfortunate men who date younger sister Ayoola. My Sister, the Serial Killer weaves through the past and present, told from the point of view of Korede, protecting her serial killer sister at all costs. But when Ayoola meets the cute doctor Korede works with, Korede realises time is running out, and if she does nothing, she could lose everything.

Ayoola is suitably spoiled, doted on by every man she meets, her innocent smiles and manipulative charms ensuring she really can get away with murder. Korede, on the other hand, works hard, looks after and out for her mother and sister, and must help her sister dispose of evidence.

Anyone who has felt like the overlooked child, or has had to deal with a ‘perfect’ sibling will relate to Korede. Anyone who has been tasked with ‘looking after’ the household too young will understand why she does what she does. Her family is little and perhaps, to some on the outside, broken, but Korede will do anything she can to keep it intact.

The humour and wit throughout is great, and Korede’s voice really shines through, especially with Weruche Opia’s narration. Opia also does an amazing job with the voices of others throughout the tale, ensuring it is always clear exactly who is speaking. The interactions and relationships and natural feeling to the characters was an absolute joy to listen to.

We’re never quite told everything, and it us to the reader to decide whether to believe Ayoola or not. Korede as narrator is reliable, but she hears things second-hand from Ayoola, half-truths and blatant lies mixed in with what could be the truth. Braithwaite proves herself here as a talented, darkly humorous writer with a (excuse the pun) killer wit.

My Sister, the Serial Killer has been out for a fair while now, but if you haven’t yet checked it out, you really should.
