Book Review: “There Were Other Versions of Us” by Edward Lorn

There’s very little that can be said in a review for an 8,000-word story. I’ll start with the fact this won’t my introduction to Lorn’s writing. I won’t really know if it’s a good starting point until I check out some of his other work, but this tale definitely makes me want to do that.

I picked this up via Audible, and it’s really worth checking out. It’s a short listen, and one you’ll want to stay with until the end. The narration was good, and the tale was strange, twisted and entertaining. I definitely think I’ll be returning for a second listen.

It’s the kind of story where you keep trying to predict what will happen next, but will still be surprised every step of the way. Lorn’s writing draws you in deeper and deeper, until you are completely submerged in the story. There’s no clear path through these woods, and the ending is one to rock you, leave you feeling off balance.

I don’t even want to do my usual summary of the story. It being so short, it’s likely I’d accidently give something away. I went into this without really knowing anything about it, and I’m glad I did. It’s worth doing the same.

Give this one a go – you won’t be disappointed.
