Glorious, 2022

I’m so glad I had the opportunity to view this via screener, because I’m not sure I would’ve stumbled into this one of my own choosing! But I’m glad I watched it because it was a great pick-me-up to a difficult day, and I’m flying high on my laughter. I highly recommend just jumping right in with both feet and embracing all of the unknown without diving into the trailers or reviews. It’s seriously weird, absolutely disgusting, and utterly hilarious thanks in part to the uncomfortable yet charismatic bond between the cheeky Ryan Kwanten and out-of-his-mind comedic genius J.K. Simmons.

If you’re a fan of horror with a healthy dose of black comedy, this will be right up your alley. While it’s got a rocky start, this low budget and bare bones cosmic horror flick really makes for a solid bit of entertainment. The concept is outrageous: a grieving, lonely man is on a quest to assuage his pain when he stumbles into a rest stop and bumps into a mysterious traveler in the grimy stall next to him. The two strike up an unlikely conversation often using a stall’s “glory hole” to communicate most clearly. Yes, you read that right. Ridiculous! But what transpires next is an unhinged battle of wits and that also deftly tackles deep topics such as theology, mythology, and even a touch of ethics, all sandwiched between some silly, squelchy scenes and guffaw level gross out action. I don’t know what the heck I was expecting from this, but it certainly wasn’t what I got, and that’s a GREAT thing haha!

If you can bear with the awkwardness of it’s opening, you’ll be greatly rewarded with a cosmic conundrum of bonkers proportions and a genuinely weird but uproariously good time. It’s short and sweet and a perfect choice for some week night levity after a hard day of work. (Just don’t watch it while you’re eating lunch or dinner, that was a mistake haha! Oof.)
