Book Review: Joyride by Jack Ketchum

Published by Dorchester Publishing

Jack Ketchum never fails to grab you by the throat - you feel his stories.

What could you do if someone was keeping a list of all the transgressions against him; considering the slightest thing could set him off, including your name? He wants to do it, RETAL; but hasn’t gotten up the nerve - until he stumbles upon a murder in progress. The story is detailed in ways that aren’t for those easily upset by violence, bloodshed, and sexual abuse. There’s a quick couple of pages that give a glimpse into both the antagonist’s and protagonist’s childhoods. It’s a fast-paced read that I found hard to put down. When the killer decides he’s ready to retaliate, the world seems to fall into place just for him. It’s relentless to the point that I needed to know what would happen next. That’s the best kind of writing.

At the end of Joyride, Jack Ketchum adds a bonus story called “Weed Species”. It’s 86 pages of Hell, made even worse by the fact that it’s based on the true crime of Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo. There is not a single author that tramples through the horrors of humanity with more skill than Ketchum. This story, like The Girl Next Door, might make you sick. As a stand-alone, it is worthy of 5 Stars.
