Book Review: Joyride by Jack Ketchum

Jack Ketchum never fails to grab you by the throat - you feel his stories.

What could you do if someone was keeping a list of all the transgressions against him; considering the slightest thing could set him off, including your name? He wants to do it, RETAL; but hasnโ€™t gotten up the nerve - until he stumbles upon a murder in progress. The story is detailed in ways that arenโ€™t for those easily upset by violence, bloodshed, and sexual abuse. Thereโ€™s a quick couple of pages that give a glimpse into both the antagonistโ€™s and protagonistโ€™s childhoods. Itโ€™s a fast-paced read that I found hard to put down. When the killer decides heโ€™s ready to retaliate, the world seems to fall into place just for him. Itโ€™s relentless to the point that I needed to know what would happen next. Thatโ€™s the best kind of writing.

At the end of Joyride, Jack Ketchum adds a bonus story called โ€œWeed Speciesโ€. Itโ€™s 86 pages of Hell, made even worse by the fact that itโ€™s based on the true crime of Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo. There is not a single author that tramples through the horrors of humanity with more skill than Ketchum. This story, like The Girl Next Door, might make you sick. As a stand-alone, it is worthy of 5 Stars.
