[Review] - Tomb of Gods

From the outside, Tomb of Gods sounds like a typical horror tale in Egypt; an expedition follows some crazy markings into a mountain tomb in Egypt in search of answers and relics. I was expecting mummies, booby traps, and curses. What I got was so much more!

Seriously, I was frequently surprised by things as this story went along. I was hoping for a cross between The Mummy and Indiana Jones, but Tomb of Gods was so much more. The various levels the team must traverse are mesmerizing and terrifying. There are living nightmares, scary monsters, dark truths, and more to keep you on edge. And due to the emotional struggles these characters must face in the depths of this hellish plain, the reader is given plenty of background on each. At first, I thought it was page padding; but then their backstories played important roles in the second half, bringing everything full circle.

As previously noted, Tomb of Gods is full of surprises. The last hundred or so pages of this novel constantly caught me off guard – things continued to get crazier, darker, and more suspenseful with every passing chapter. The time spent in the actual Tomb of Gods was especially wild and mind-blowing. I loved it!

What starts out as a good adventure story, grows into so much more as it moves along. Tomb of Gods is fantastically imaginative, darkly fun, and horrifically astounding; I expect this book to make my Top 10 Reads of 2020. I will be looking up more of Brian Moreland’s work before the year is up!
