A Movie Review of “Meander”

Meander (2020)

Written and Directed by Mathieu Turi, Horror/Drama/Scifi
NR, 90min runtime

A grieving mother, wandering hopelessly through life after the loss of her child, encounters a “kind stranger” who offers her a ride to safety instead of letting depression take her life. Of course this poor decision to hitchhike to “safety” means she wakes up in a metal tunnel in a funky spandex suit with a device strapped to her arm. Girl, you in danger. You should’ve just kept running. But then again if you had, we wouldn’t have had this fun movie. So, thanks, I guess?

Let me just say before anything else, if I wake up in a tube with a thing strapped to my arm, I wish this to serve as my last will and testament:

- my sisterwife gets my plush SpongeBob collection and my camera gear
- my mom gets my houseplants
- my brother and his wife get all my cookware and DVDs/movies
- my dad gets my albums and music
- my bf gets my computer shit and electronics
- bestie Heather gets my books and my blanket and mugs
- all the kiddos get my art supplies
- please plant a headstone somewhere cool with a bad pun on it and my name in a very aesthetic font, no Times New Roman or whatever

Because fuck this nope I’m gonna jump right the fuck outta my skin and die where I was dropped thanks. You won’t see me using my sadness as self-exploration, I will just drown in my own tears!!! I will not remotely survive long enough to see the butthole of spacetime and find freedom. RIP one night only for me.

Anyway, this movie is great for fans of “Cube” and “Escape Room” and “Saw” who also love a slap in the face reminder to process your grief and trauma ala Mike Flanagan.

Edited to add: Elle was very upset that I left her off my personal will and testament for handing down my belongings so I’ll give her my wonky Macbook laptop with my sticker collection on it because stickers are cool and so is Elle!

Tw: suicidal ideation, small spaces/claustrophobia, body horror, loss of a child, grief and trauma, kidnapping and torture
