A Movie Review for “Marrowbone”

“Marrowbone” 2017

Directed by Sergio G Sanchez

I have been waiting to watch this for quite some time, and I took advantage of a sick day to grab a big bowl of hot soup and a mug of tea and nestled into a blanket pile to lose myself in a movie for a while. Marrowbone was exactly the perfect thing. Oh bless it, this was not remotely what I was expecting and I love a good surprise! My best advice is for you to press play with little to no expectations, and just lose yourself in the story. This is a very moody, broody, and emotional drama-thriller with some gothic ghost story vibes. The performances are fantastic, each and every one of them layered and nuanced, just brimming with emotion. Cheers to the entire cast here who really throw their whole heart and soul into their characters, but of course I’m all about my girl Anya Taylor Joy and the wonderful George Mackay!I am absolutely in love with the peaceful countryside setting and crumbling manor, and how it fully mirrors its characters and all their personality traits, and it’s fun that the timeline is a fair bit ambiguous minus one specific newsreel clip that gives you date context. The vagueness really does add a lot to the overall mood. It’s an incredibly slow burn, but absolutely worth the patience for its many reveals and twists. The final payout is worth the wait, and gives way to a bittersweet story of love, friendship, and acceptance of grief. It’s heartbreaking, haunting, distressing, and utterly engrossing.

TW: PTSD, loss of a parent, chronic illness, gun violence, seizures and medical trauma, knife violence, blood, mental illness, psychological distress, abusive families, animal death
