Introducing “Sloth” by Joanne Askew

SLOTH

By Joanne Askew

Britain is rotting. Sloth has taken over the land. Natali and her wife, Lana, must raise their heart rates every three hours or the Sloth virus will slow their hearts to nothing. But Natali faces more than Sloth. She faces the depression her wife is consumed by, the loss of their child, and soon they must face a new presence on Britain's decaying roads. There are voices that yell through the silent night and gunfire that echoes from the skeletons of a society in ruins.

Sloth explores mental health at the end of the world. We see Natali and Lana come to terms with the state of the nation, to terms with the death of their son from the virus, and the choices they need to make on the road despite how hard they are. The damp seems to follow them as Sloth does, inching its way deep into their veins.

Each step is exhausting for them, but they must keep moving, to ward off the virus, to get to somewhere safe, away from the damp, the rot, and people who take advantage of the ruin the disease creates, but Tali's love for Lana must evolve for them to move forward. They must learn to let go in order to survive and be at peace.
