I’m Dreaming of a White Doomsday is an apocalyptic Christmas movie that isn’t for the faint of heart. While the movie isn’t super gory, it deals with a lot of heavy subject matter.

Director Mike Lombardo unleashed his debut feature length horror film in 2017. In this film, we follow Kelly and Riley Enck. Prior to the movie starting, Kelly’s husband, Simon, has disappeared and we learn that the world has ended and they’re surviving in the apocalypse. This movie also takes place around Christmas time. Kelly, the mother, has realized that they do not have enough supplies to survive the winter, and she’s running out of options. She leaves her son behind in their bunker while she scavenges for supplies, because she wants to keep them surviving for Christmas, one last time.

Doomsday is a horror movie that is all about dread, but more importantly, it’s about love, family, sacrifice, and made with a lot of empathy. This movie was the product of a lot of personal pain in the director’s life. Writing this story was a way for him to unleash his emotions. Lombardo really captured two hard things to cover. The first being a mother’s love for her child. The second being the feeling of powerlessness watching a person you love withering away. I don’t want to get into too many spoilers, but I assure you that this movie is a Christmas movie despite how bleak it all sounds. However, most Christmas movies bring out a sense of joy; this movie brings out a sense of pain. I have seen this movie several times and each time it made me cry.

Do yourself a favor this Christmas time. There are a lot of big budget Christmas horror movies that are classics. Silent Night Deadly Night, Gremlins, Better Watch Out, and Krampus all come to mind. I’m Dreaming of a White Doomsday also deserves a seat at the table. I strongly recommend that you check this movie out, just be warned that the movie is heavy and it won’t let up.
