The Mother of a Monster, A Fairy Tale, by Christina Rosso
Once upon a time, there was a woman, a wife and mother, who was a master of herbs and tinctures. She lived in a small cottage in a small village where superstition filled the air like fog. Her husband, a war hero, succumbed to an infection after returning home with one less appendage. The womanβs potions failed to save him, leaving her a widow and her son fatherless. The villagers began to twist her healing into something sinister.
When We No Longer Need WIHM, I Will Rejoice
Hereβs something I will say, quite regularly, and will absolutely always stand by. Women have always been part of Horror. Some of (though not the first) the first horror novels were written by women β Ann Radcliffeβs The Italian was published in 1796, inspired by The Castle of Otranto (1764) by Horace Walpole, and of course Frankenstein is still a hugely popular classic, written by Mary Shelley. Even some of the classics contain elements of horror, seeping into novels penned by women, because letβs face it, a womanβs life contains a multitude of horrors. Who can ever forget the imagery of a woman trapped in an attic, simply because she is unwell, while her husband brings in a new, younger woman?
Book Review: The Dead Girls Club by Damien Angelica Walters
There are a few things I absolutely adore when Iβm reading horror, or thrillers: female central characters, some sort of coming-of-age or teenage tragedy aspect, and a chapter-to-chapter time jump. I got all three of these with Jeremy Heplerβs CRICKET HUNTERS, and I didnβt expect Iβd be so lucky as to find another so soon. Iβm absolutely ecstatic to say that Walters completely nailed every single thing I love in my thrillers on the head.
Book Review: My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite
Iβm going to be completely honest β I didnβt know what I was getting myself into when I grabbed this book off the shelf at the library. Iβd seen it floating around on Twitter & Bookstagram for most of the last year (it came out in November 2018), and although I didnβt know what it was about, the cover drew me in β itβs stunning!
Book Review: Seven Devils by Laura Lam and Elizabeth May
The galaxy is ruled by the ruthless Tholosian Empire. People are not born, but created, designed for whatever purpose they can serve. And each is under the control of the Oracle, whispering in their minds, reinforcing propaganda, issuing orders. But the Resistance is growing, especially with the former heir as a member. She and Clo β engineer and pilot, born naturally and without the Oracleβs influence β are forced to work together to infiltrate a ship and discover what, exactly, is being transported.
