Since Victorians put poisons on their face such as arsenic, belladonna and lead, to be beautiful can be deadly. As society changed, so did society’s perceived beauty, but there is an almost constant battle that women must be attractive. When this comes to horror films, this is ultimately shown as women becoming a monster, pursuing perfection and rejected by the male dominance that made them choose this path.

What Horror Means to Me

I grew up in a Christian family, attended church every Friday for Choir Practice, Sunday for Service, during the week for Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and eventually Pathfinders. My parents were part of the church army and I had tea and cake in the Vicarage. We were that kind of family.

On the flipside of all that, I always had a bit of a thing for the macabre, although I was afraid of the dark and that which might lurk within it I also had a curiosity which just could not be satiated. I was drawn to it in a way that I wanted to keep digging my way deeper.

So, in and around my duties as a good little Christian girl, I also had a ring binder of Serial Killer research.

Women Developing Their Characters: An Argument for Protagonist Diversity Beyond the Audience Surrogate

Almost everyone loves to project themselves into a good fantasy from time to time, whether it be through a video game, book, television show or just in our own minds. Some media, such as video games, make this process very easy by putting the player in the protagonist’s shoes throughout the story. In literature, the easiest way to accomplish this effect is to use what theorists call an audience surrogate. Audience surrogates appear throughout literature, but some popular examples include Dr. Watson from the Sherlock Holmes stories, Nick Carraway from The Great Gatsby, and Bella Swan from Twilight.
