Nightwatchers: Part One; A Short Story by Tabatha Wood
Part One
My shift finished one hour and forty-five minutes ago. Actually, one hundred and seven minutes and thirty-two... Thirty-three... Thirty-four seconds ago. Not that Iβm counting or anything.
Damian, my boss, said heβll pay me overtime, but we both know thatβs not true. I work more hours than anyone in this place, probably even more than he does, but I never see an extra dollar in my wage packet. Damianβs like a grown-up version of the most annoying kid in the schoolyard. Heβll look you square in the eyes and swear heβs telling you, βGodβs own truth,β while he crosses his fingers behind his back, trying to excuse his lies. Most of the time heβs a pretty sweet guy, but as a boss, he can be an asshole. Iβd quit, but who else would hire me? Small town problems. They see a weirdo first, ex-con second. Iβve been out well over a year, but β¦β¦..
Amateur Dramatics: a Short Story
He groaned, gritting his teeth and trying to cover his ears, to block out the chittering, chattering sound above him. The high trills and tap-tap-tap on the floor. Open auditions. Hehated open auditions. They drew out the worst of the worst, and subjected him to days of listening to untalented hacks try and prove they could sing and could dance and could act. Most of them couldnβt. And sometimes, those that couldnβt cried and wailed as they were ushered out of the building. Open auditions meant he had no rest whatsoever.
Self Preservation - A Short Story Reading by Michelle Enelen
That water ainβt cooled enough. Iβd ask you to blow on it, but without your lips Iβm afraid youβll just blow it out. Youβre drooling again, stop trying to talk! Boy, what a pair. You with no lips and me, no ear. Yes, yes. We agreed. An eye for an eye and all that. We shouldβve played it like strip poker. The losing hand loses a hand. We didnβt need to take turns; I truly feel like that was a bad idea. Now when we meet meat, thereβs no one to make βem feel comfortable. Either of us answers and they skedaddle right pronto. Maybe I should get a wig.
