Reviews, Articles, and Special Features:

The Influence of War
War, huh, what is it good for?
Turns out, war might actually be good for movies.
I’ve always been fascinated with films, and Hollywood, and the influences behind those films. Not always the people making them, but the wider social context. The ideas which filter in from the world and are put through a lens to present as make-believe. And horror, more than anything, is one of the strongest genres to do that.

Book Review: Butchers by Todd Sullivan
Butchers drops you into a fully developed vampiric society in South Korea. For me, it felt like there is a grander world here, but I was only getting the opportunity to experience a very small part of it. This novella represents a single story from this vast world. This was my first experience with Todd, I enjoyed his style and flare for story-telling.
Yes, I am on record stating that I am not a big fan of vampire fiction. That being said, the novella format, the quick chapters, Todd's talent, and the freshness of a story in South Korea kept me enthralled.

Book Review: The Raven by Jonathan Janz
Despite owning a legitimate stack of Jonathan Janz novels, I had yet to read him prior to The Raven (with the exception of an old short story he did early on in his career). This one was receiving a lot of early buzz, which led me to requesting an ARC for review before they were even ready. As the months passed, more excitement built around the novel, and now I know why - Janz has created a wonderfully diverse (yet familiar) world of monsters here. Its post-apocalyptic setting not only screams dark fantasy, it provides a vivid backdrop that (surprisingly) brought to mind The Lord of the Rings.

Self Preservation - A Short Story Reading by Michelle Enelen
That water ain’t cooled enough. I’d ask you to blow on it, but without your lips I’m afraid you’ll just blow it out. You’re drooling again, stop trying to talk! Boy, what a pair. You with no lips and me, no ear. Yes, yes. We agreed. An eye for an eye and all that. We should’ve played it like strip poker. The losing hand loses a hand. We didn’t need to take turns; I truly feel like that was a bad idea. Now when we meet meat, there’s no one to make ‘em feel comfortable. Either of us answers and they skedaddle right pronto. Maybe I should get a wig.

iZombie & Euphemisms for Oppression
Please note, the below contains spoilers for all five seasons of iZombie.
iZombie, a show about a young woman with a bright, perfect future ahead of her who gets that all ripped away when she is turned into a zombie, was recommended to me a long time ago. I put it off for a while due to lack of time, but with a global pandemic, I found myself with time, and read the first graphic novel before binging the show.
