Book Review: The Dead Girls Club by Damien Angelica Walters

There are a few things I absolutely adore when I’m reading horror, or thrillers: female central characters, some sort of coming-of-age or teenage tragedy aspect, and a chapter-to-chapter time jump. I got all three of these with Jeremy Hepler’s CRICKET HUNTERS, and I didn’t expect I’d be so lucky as to find another so soon. I’m absolutely ecstatic to say that Walters completely nailed every single thing I love in my thrillers on the head.

Look, I’m not sure I’m going to be able to tell you anything new here. I’ve seen nothing but positive acclaim for this title, and I’m going to be adding my voice to the din momentarily. 

The elevator pitch for We Need To Do Something: a family of four shelters in a bathroom on page one to avoid a severe storm warning. Booth sets out to do something pretty unique and extraordinary here, asking himself, “Can I set an entire 150-page book in one small room and make it interesting?”

Book Review: The Influence by Ramsey Campbell

Yes, this novel was originally published back in the late 80s, but it has since been returned to the forefront of news with a Netflix movie and a reprinting from Flame Tree Press. At the time of writing this, I have not yet seen the screen adaptation, so I won’t be able to make any comparisons there. But that’s just fine, because we’re here to talk about the book, anyway.

Campbell is an author still relatively new to me, if you can believe it. In fact, The Wise Friend from this year was my first time reading him (though I had heard his name before). That makes The Influence my second experience with his writing, and another good one.
