Book Review: Blood Red Sky by Paul Kane

Post-apocalyptic goodness wrapped in enough differences in theme/monsters to make it fresh.
This book definitely reads as YA. While I was reading it, I kept thinking of Charlie Higson's The Enemy series, in which all the adults over 18 turn into zombie-like creatures. This book isn't zombies, but if you replaced the monsters in this book with the z word, it did feel kind of interchangeable.
We are dealing with trolls, or at least that is what the kids call them. They are bloodthirsty monsters out to kill off humans. Early in the book, it is made clear that the adults were the first to go. The trolls went after adults first. Maybe they tasted better, maybe it was some part of a sweeping invasion plan. We don't really know.
We follow a group of five teenagers and one younger child as they lay low in a remote farmhouse. They scavenge for food, all the while Faith (our youngest) is trying to find a weakness in the trolls’ design/anatomy. Faith is a bit of a child genius - doing experiments out in a shed on the property.
There is a shift in theme, a realization (I don't want to call it a twist) but perception definitely changes and that, for me, was a nice little piece of plotting.
I also really enjoyed the ending of this book, I can't really tell you why. I mean I could, but that would ruin it for you. I will probably give a bit more on this in my video review.
This book feels like there may be a sequel. I look forward to that as well as digging into more of Paul's work. This was my first.
