Book Review: Blackburn Station by Karen Lucia
Genre: Sci-Fi
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
This is an interesting read from author (and DHR contributor!) Karen Lucia. Lucia is a skilled writer, and if you enjoy sci-fi with an element of mystery and intriguing female characters, Blackburn Station is worth checking out.
Novellas continue to impress me with how authors manage to utilise them, conveying so much while ensuring every word counts. Blackburn Station starts with Jane escaping the destruction of her home, the lone survivor when her family and community are wiped out. Outside of Union control, it’s hard to know exactly who may have destroyed the station, and Jane isn’t ignorant to how many disliked what was going on there. She faces a choice: to completely move on and leave Blackburn in the past, or return and salvage what she can.
Jane is a really intriguing character, and it’s hard to say too much without crossing into spoiler territory, but Lucia manages to guide the reader along with Jane, drawing us into her story and what exactly happened to Blackburn, without it ever feeling like a drag. The tension and mystery are kept at just the right level throughout, and as we peel back the layers, we become even more invested.
I would definitely recommend this one, and I look forward to reading Karen Lucia’s other works, too.
