Book Review: We’re All Monsters Here (Vampires) by Amy Marsden

Amy Marsden’s Vampires trilogy concluded in June 2026, and what a fun ride it was! I picked up the first book after Marsden participated in the inaugural Speculative Fiction Indie Novella Championship (SFINCS) and just had to see the series through to the end. Each book is a novella that you can sit down and read in a sitting or two, which is something I really enjoy since I am frequently navigating an overstuffed schedule. In case you are wondering why there are three novellas rather than one full length novel, these really work well as shorter pieces. Each book is its own self-contained story with a beginning, middle, and end that will leave you satisfied. I am going to focus on book 1 to avoid any series spoilers.
The books all feature Anna as the main character, a vampire who has lived for hundreds of years, built her nest of riches, and travelled the world. Standard vampire stuff, yeah, but her thing is that she loves to eat the rich. Well, the rich and just generally bad people, but book 1 is all about her draining her way through the executives of an evil organization that is adding to the climate troubles of the world, all while also enjoying a weekend getaway. Even though Anna is a blood drinking, murdering vampire, you can’t help but find yourself rooting for her.
Anna is a planner. She is paranoid. She is careful. That is how she has lived as long as she has. But, of course, there is a wrench that gets thrown into her murder spree plans in the form of a sexy human secretary who got dragged along on the trip. Enter the sapphic romance aspect of the story. Anna prefers to eat the rich, but she also knows that sometimes you have to eat innocent people as a means of survival. But things are never as easy as draining your one-night stand. As the retreat becomes more complicated, Anna has to navigate the struggles of being a morally gray vampire with hunters on her tail.
This is a really fun series of novellas that is perfect for readers who enjoy vampires, sapphic romance, gore filled action that also makes you laugh, and anyone who loves a little anti-capitalistic spin within the horror genre.
