Women in Horror Month: “Treasure” by Oyinkan Braithwaite

Treasure by Oyinkan Braithwaite

Treasure is an Instagram influencer. Well, almost. She just needs to reach the next stage. Just needs that last handful of followers. And she knows how to keep her followers happy. She knows the type of pictures they like, the right angles to get, the perfect hashtags to caption each image - #blessed, after all. But beneath the superficial surface of Instagram, Treasure’s life doesn’t match up to the pictures. But her followers want to see life in a gated community, they want luxury and they want Treasure, but no one wants her more than @Sho4Sure.

I picked this up around the time I finished My Sister, the Serial Killer, and with a runtime of 47 minutes I really should have listened sooner. Treasure is a fantastic story, unfolding so neatly you’re really not sure what is going to happen next. Braithwaite does a great job of laying the breadcrumbs and allowing the reader to follow slowly behind. There’s some true dark comedy here, too, with certain lines and scenes offering some very witty moments. It’s hard not to get roped up in this story, and the ending lands so well it sticks in your head.

So don’t be like me and let this sit unread or un-listened to for too long – Braithwaite writes with a solid skill and style, completely enveloping you in Treasure’s story. And as for the narration on Audible…it’s fantastic, and Adepero Oduye did an excellent job in bringing these characters to life.
