Book Review: The Carrow Haunt” by Darcy Coates

The Carrow Haunt
By Darcy Coates

Buddy read this with my sweet ghoul Becca!!

This was either a 2.5 or a 3, I'm not sure! Maybe 2.75 to split the difference? This is my second Darcy Coates book, and I loved the idea of a haunted house tour host getting into spooky shenanigans. I don't know why but this felt super, super YA to me while reading, which I wouldn't say is a bad thing but expectation-wise, I thought this would feel more adult. It was a bit confusing because the stakes felt very low for most of the book, then ramped up dramatically, only for the story itself to sort of undo the drama...? I don't want to say too much without giving spoilers, but I also had an issue with how convenient some things were for the sake of making the story work. I don't like when characters remember LOTS of minute details as a "personality quirk" but then conveniently forget one super obvious thing that the rest of the plot sort of hinges on - again, not giving too much away, but it annoyed me a little.

The spooky parts were definitely creepy - I'd have been scared if reading home alone at night! Tbh I was even a little creeped out while reading at night with my bf home, haha.

This sort of felt like a Scooby-Doo movie - like the Witch's Ghost sort of vibes? I liked it okay but wouldn't reread probably, and definitely think this could've been a lot shorter.
