The Visitor, 2022
Blumhouse is like a shady realtor. They give you a set of great promo pics of an artistic looking Southern Gothic, guide you on a walkthrough of the best parts of the movie via an expertly cut trailer, and if you don’t think too hard on it you’ll get duped and buy into it all. But the second you settle in and make yourself at home to watch it you begin to see flaws and wonder if you’ve been hoodwinked. And the quicker it barrels forward through its 86min runtime, the faster you begin to realize it's just a fuckin money pit. Damn! Couple that with the fact that Finn serves up as much charisma as a dried twig, and oops, you’ve now got the perfect recipe for a blazing trash fire of nonsense. Double damn! Ugh. Seriously, these writers and producers truly burned this one straight to the ground with great gusto, and sadly (or, perhaps, thankfully??) all that’s left at the “twist ending” is a steaming pile of ash-holery.
So, in short, thanks, but no thanks. The only alternate history I’m interested in is one where this movie doesn’t ever get made. I’ll never be watching this again.
TW: mention of miscarriage, loss of a child, mention of abortion, pregnancy and birth topics, death, hallucinations, white supremacists, snakes, bugs, pseudo religion, extreme gaslighting, ritual sacrifice, incest, cults, gore and blood, body horror
