Pride in Horror Month 2024: Submission Guidelines

We are open for our Pride in Horror 2024 Submissions! As a majority queer review team, we are dedicated to promoting and highlighting diverse voices, and Pride in Horror is a big part of that. This June, we’re inviting you to submit to our event – queer voices and allies are, as always, welcome, and we’d love to spotlight your work. All you have to do is read below to see what we’re looking for, and if you’d like to check out the past pieces we’ve featured for June, just search β€˜Pride’ on the site and have a browse.

Submission details are also included below. Please note, submissions are open from now until May 31st, 2024. If you have any questions, please feel free to email the address below and simply note β€˜QUESTION’ in the subject line so we can be sure to pick this up.

What We’re Looking For

-Articles

-Reviews (books, films, games, TV…)

-Author Spotlights

-Artist Spotlights

-Listacles

-Personal Essays

-Short Stories/Flash Fiction

-Poems

-Book Extracts

-…and anything else you want to submit!

We are looking for works that fit into horror and other dark genres, though we are flexible – we include sci-fi, paranormal romance, true crime, and more! We also welcome all LGBTQIA+ history and non-fiction.

We recommend aiming for up to 2,500 words, however we welcome longer submissions but these will be split into parts. We want pieces by and about queer voices, and we welcome reprints! Please note this is voluntary – there is no payment, but again, you’re welcome to submit reprints, extracts, etc.

Submitting

Submit your work to dhrfeatures[@]gmail[.]com (with brackets removed). These will be edited by Elle and if you’d like a copy of the edited version please let us know. Submit as a Word or Google doc, along with a short bio, and any relevant links you’d like to include. Please ensure β€˜PIHM Submission’ is included in the subject line.

As you can likely see from the above, we are very open with what we include – our main priority is highlighting as many voices as we can, so please don’t hold back for fear it won’t β€˜fit’!

Please also include any relevant images you’d like such as book covers, headshots, etc.

FAQ

Please note, this will be updated if we receive similar questions from multiple folks.

Can I submit …

Yes! As above, don’t hold back – if you’re not sure if something will fit, send it through anyway!

Do I have to self-disclose?

Absolutely not! You do not need to include anything you’re not comfortable making public. If you want to submit under a fake name with a fake bio, you absolutely can. We don’t need any more information than what you’re willing to provide.

Can I submit a piece discussing the portrayal of LGBTQIA+ characters in something by a cis het author?

Yes, absolutely! We’ll accept all review for PIHM, we just ask that the books are either written by queer authors or feature queer characters. If you want to highlight a book by an ally you think handles things particularly well, or want to discuss a portrayal you feel was handled badly, we’d love to hear from you!
