Women in Horror Month: Jason’s 5 Favourite Horror Novels by Women

I don't want to make this windup too long, but you should know before I start that on a conservative estimate, I've read at least 500 horror novels written by women in my lifetime. That would make these the top 1%.

Countdown mode engage...

5. Sineater by Elizabeth Massie

Horror readers seem to have forgotten about this Stoker-winning folk horror novel. Fix that!

4. The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward

Believe the hype, folks. Ward is here to stay. The sheer audacity of the premise is remarkable.

3. Hollow Kingdom/Feral Creatures by Kira Buxton

I know I'm cheating here with the 2-for-1, but it's a duology, so deal with it. The zombie apocalypse, told through the eyes of a crow who was raised by a redneck. Horror comedy at its finest.

2. Betty by Tiffany McDaniel

I don't believe I'm stretching the limits of horror much with this selection, but some would disagree. Maybe it's just a new genre that we were unprepared for: family drama horror.

1. The Death House by Sarah Pinborough

I love Behind Her Eyes just as much as you do, but I still think this is Pinborough's greatest achievement.

Honorable mention goes to Agustina Basterrica's Tender is the Flesh, which is both gross and awesome.

(Dangit, I knew I couldn't keep it down to 5)
