[Review] - The Magpie Coffin

The Magpie Coffin
By Wile E. Young

Death’s Head Press has a new Splatter Western series, and it’s kicking off strong with The Magpie Coffin!

Salem Covington collects lives and stories in gruesome and brutal ways in an effort to save his soul. Tied to his Gun (which whispers to him and protects him against all other guns – except one, which is closer than he thinks), Covington goes on a revenge mission upon learning that his Comanche mentor has been murdered.

The story is, more or less, what you’d expect. It’s violent and unrelenting, but not without frequent sequences of entertainment. The way Covington is aided and protected by his Gun and dead mentor certainly makes for a more engaging ride (considering how Wild West revenge stories are played out), but there is a little left to be desired. I wouldn’t say much – because I really enjoyed this book – but I would have liked more magic and backstory in the mix of things. There just needed to be a bit more depth to push this one over the edge of excellence.

The Magpie Coffin is a great introduction to a promising new series. I can’t wait to read the next entry, as well as a possible sequel featuring Covington.
