Hispanic Heritage Month: Conceptual Photographer and Horror Book Reviewer Max Stark

In honour of #HispanicHeritageMonth I’d like to take a moment to highlight a fellow book reviewer and artist in the Horror Community!

Today’s post is dedicated to reader and photographer, Max Stark.

Max’s art style and creative photography is raw, emotional, and imaginative, blending a love for gothic tinged horror with the authentic human experience. Each piece of art he creates is layered with textures and a masterful use of bold colours, specifically cool, mysterious blues and deep, intense red hues like ruby and scarlet. His double-exposure portraits of authors and fellow reviewers are filled with a sense of wonder and adventure, but also melancholic loneliness; these particular works are somehow simultaneously inviting and lush as well as cold, foreboding, and dark. It’s a really wonderful juxtaposition of elements and very telling of Max’s favourite book and movie genre being Horror! For so many, Horror is as much a way to process our deep emotional experiences in addition to enjoying the rush of having the pants scared off you. This is most certainly the conceptual theme of Max’s entire body of work in his creative photography.

In addition, Max has also flexed his photographer skills by dabbling in Wedding Photography. In these pieces, you can see Max’s typical silvery grey aesthetic with punches of colour really creates a magical, vintage vibe. He is incredibly attuned to the little moments and thus very sensitively captures the most romantic, intimate moments of the wedding experience. Highlighting certain tones and elements as well as expert use of Black and White photography to leverage emotion over aesthetics has a wonderful effect on his work.

You can find Max on Twitter or Instagram if you’re interested in commissioning him for a portrait or conceptual work!
Be sure to strike while the iron is hot, because Max’s commission slots are limited, and you don’t want to miss out.

You can find Max’s reviews on Goodreads here, and his full portfolio of photography here.
