Teen Vampire Flicks That Don’t Suck: aka What To Watch That Isn’t Twilight

Listen here, we don’t deny that the “Twilight Saga” and “Midnight Sun” have their place in the Pop Culture Verse like any other teenage horror/supernatural flicks, but you won’t find any of them listed here today. Enjoy our picks for Teen Vampire Flicks that don’t suck!

“Bit” (2020)

We included this on a previous list, but it’s worth mentioning again. A solid entry into the Teenage themed vampire movie is “Bit",” a humorous, satirical, feminist romp through nighttime cityscapes. Centering on a group of gals in their late teens/early 20s, they take out the trash in LA’s dating scene and then some. Has Laurel bitten off more than she can chew with her new girl gang? You’ll just have to watch it and find out. Perfect for a Girls Night in and available for virtual rentals and streaming on platforms like Youtube and Amazon.

“My Best Friend Is A Vampire” (1987)

This teen-scream horror-comedy entry into our list is sure to delight and disgust everyone. When a teenage boy decides to explore the world of “older women,” he goes on a date with a woman that’s…a little older than expected. His world gets flipped upside down when he discovers he’s been turned into a vampire. As if being a regular teenager wasn’t bad enough?! UGHHH! Enjoy this absolutely cheesy entry onto our list. You can rent it on Amazon or stream it for free (with ads) on youtube

”Vampire Academy” (2014)

Based on the popular YA book series of the same name, “Vampire Academy” follows a teenage human and her teenage vampire best friend as they navigate the balance between Vampire and Human society. They must stick together to protect the world from forces of evil, and make sure that nobody learns their secrets. Dun! Dun! Duuunnnnnn! You can stream or Rent on Youtube or Amazon.

“Mortal Instruments” (2013)

If you’ve ever been on Booktube, you’ll find no shortage of reviewers gushing about “The Mortal Instruments” series by beloved YA author Cassandra Clare. Clary and her mother are Shadowhunters, an elite task force charged with keeping the humans safe from Supernatural Creatures. When Clary’s mother is kidnapped, Clary must fight to protect her and discover the power she’s had within her all along! It’s got mystery! Romance! Intrigue! Dramaaaa! And nary a sparkly being in sight. You can stream it on platforms like Amazon (free with ads!)

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (1992)

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, chances are you’ve heard of our beloved Vampire Slaying Heroine: the one and only Buffy! Before Joss Whedon’s series skyrocketed to fame, we had this glorious late-80s/early-90s horror comedy entry (also written by Whedon.) Although this film is not considered “canon” to the Whedonverse version, it’s certainly worth watching. This is a darker, wittier Black Comedy version of the Slayer story of popular cheerleader Buffy discovering her true calling as protector of humans and slayer of supernatural evils. Rent or stream it on platforms like YouTube, Hulu, or Amazon.

“Fright Night” (1985)

Another classic entry into the vintage horror genre! (Which also received an update in the 2000s that’s also pretty fun.) When Charlie discovered his new neighbor has a dark secret, he does his best to protect his family and girlfriend, but well…that doesn’t work out so well! He tries to warn them of the evil that lurks in the neighborhood, but nobody believes his stories. Will Charlie be able to save the day? Will he develop a phobia of the sun? Find out when you watch this darkly comedic, super spooky flick. If you pair it with the updated version starring Colin Firth, it really makes for a great pizza night and movie chat. Available for streaming on Amazon, YouTube and more.

“The Lost Boys” (1987)

Do we really need to explain this one? Too bad, we’re not going to, because it’s famous enough that we shouldn’t have to! You really can’t have a vampire movie list without mentioning this cult classic. What’s not to love about it?! Imaginary beach town Santa Carla. Sexy teenage vampire boys. Nighttime cityscapes. A wicked soundtrack. Plenty of Gore. Spooky vibes. Available to stream on Youtube, Amazon, and more.

“Blood: The Last Vampire“ (2009)

Saya is demon slaying, half-vampire 400-year-old teenage girl, and the last of her kind. She’s been sent to protect humanity and fight against the dark forces who intend to wipe out humanity. A live-action, wire-fu style adaptation of the original anime of the same name, this exciting update features plenty of amazing fights and lots of gore! She kicks ass and takes no shit. Now available to stream on Vudu and iTunes.
