Book Review: The Worm and His Kings

I’ll be the first person to admit that I’m not a huge consumer of media that’d fall within the β€˜cosmic horror’ sphere; that isn’t to say that I don’t like the subgenre, but my exposure to it has been pretty limited. I actually wasn’t even really sure what cosmic horror was, beyond knowing that H.P. Lovecraft supposedly pioneered the topic. After doing some investigating, the general idea seems to be that there’s a lot of unknown stuff out there that could potentially be pretty terrifying for us – big yikes, basically!

Women Developing Their Characters: An Argument for Protagonist Diversity Beyond the Audience Surrogate

Almost everyone loves to project themselves into a good fantasy from time to time, whether it be through a video game, book, television show or just in our own minds. Some media, such as video games, make this process very easy by putting the player in the protagonist’s shoes throughout the story. Here’s something I will say, quite regularly, and will absolutely always stand by. Women have always been part of Horror. Some of (though not the first) the first horror novels were written by women – Ann Radcliffe’s The Italian was published in 1796, inspired by The Castle of Otranto (1764) by Horace Walpole, and of course Frankenstein is still a hugely popular classic, written by Mary Shelley. Even some of the classics contain elements of horror, seeping into novels penned by women, because let’s face it, a woman’s life contains a multitude of horrors. Who can ever forget the imagery of a woman trapped in an attic, simply because she is unwell, while her husband brings in a new, younger woman?

Men Who Write Women: We Need to Talk

It seems we’re facing a bit of a problem right now. And it’s a conversation we’ve had over and over and over. Some individual authors have listened, or spoken out, about it. Reviewers sure as hell have, but certain people seem to believe themselves β€˜above’ the rest of us. Whether they’re writers or reviewers or even publishers, there’s people to ignore us when we say this. So it needs to be said again and again and again.

Book Review: Seven Devils by Laura Lam and Elizabeth May

The galaxy is ruled by the ruthless Tholosian Empire. People are not born, but created, designed for whatever purpose they can serve. And each is under the control of the Oracle, whispering in their minds, reinforcing propaganda, issuing orders. But the Resistance is growing, especially with the former heir as a member. She and Clo – engineer and pilot, born naturally and without the Oracle’s influence – are forced to work together to infiltrate a ship and discover what, exactly, is being transported.
