Book Review: The Raven by Jonathan Janz

I attended a Janz reading at the Scares That Care Con, where he read a chapter from a forthcoming novel.  His intense and theatrical reading was brilliant and I couldn't wait to read the book.  Well, THIS is that book.  I was even lucky enough to get it early (thanks Flame Tree!).  I would really love to tell you the premise of this one (it's killer) but I pride myself on my non-spoiler reviews, so I won't.  Put it this way.  If you're a fan of his work, you will see traces of Wolfland and Savage Species here, via some really intense action sequences.  This was the strength of the novel.

Book Review: Until Summer Comes Around by Glenn Rolfe

I am not a huge fan of the vampire sub-genre. What I am a huge fan of is Mr. Rolfe's work. I requested this ARC because of how much I enjoyed his book "The Window". Then I saw that it was a vampire story and shelved it for a while. I finally picked it up because it drops this month. I think Glen has taught me something. I don't mind vampire books if the book isn't mostly, solely about the vampires. Give me a nice little love story set to the backdrop of a 1980's touristy, beachy, carnivally ( I know, I invented some adjectives there) town. Give me coming of age with a heaping dose of my childhood.

Book Review: Invisible Chains by Michelle Lane

This is one of the better examples of horror/supernatural historical fiction that I have come across. Strong, developed characters with a main character that you will deeply care and root for. Jacqueline is young Creole slave living on a plantation in Louisiana. This is her story, Her abuse and adversity. Her pain.

This book takes the best parts of Alex Haley, Alice Walker, Anne Rice and Katherine Dunn and combines them into a slick engaging narrative. I will say though, that with the combination of themes and influences I was left wanting more in a couple of places.

Book Review: The Raven by Jonathan Janz

Despite owning a legitimate stack of Jonathan Janz novels, I had yet to read him prior to The Raven (with the exception of an old short story he did early on in his career). This one was receiving a lot of early buzz, which led me to requesting an ARC for review before they were even ready. As the months passed, more excitement built around the novel, and now I know why - Janz has created a wonderfully diverse (yet familiar) world of monsters here. Its post-apocalyptic setting not only screams dark fantasy, it provides a vivid backdrop that (surprisingly) brought to mind The Lord of the Rings.
