Book Review: Crossroads by Laurel Hightower

There are certain authors I get downright greedy with, and Laurel falls squarely within the genre. From the moment I closed Whispers in the Dark and held it close to bask in its glory, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the next Hightower story.

Going in, I’d read the barebones synopsis, and it was just enough to tell me this book was going to destroy me. I thought I might get a little time to prepare, even ten pages, but no such luck.

5 Monstrous Reads for Fans of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

The classics have always held a soft spot in my heart, encompassing a large portion of my reading as a kid and teen. I didn’t discriminate between genres, reading anything and everything I could get my little bookworm hands on in an attempt to escape a world around me that hadn’t been very kind. I was especially drawn to women writing books, looking up to them with a sort of awed reverence that their male colleagues didn’t quite elicit from me.

Jason Cavallaro Presents: My Favorite Monster Books

It's Monster Month here at Dead Head Reviews, and what better way to celebrate than spending more money on books?

I've compiled a list of my favorite monster books here, but I've skipped the ones that you've already heard of (or read already): Dracula, I am Legend, Jaws, The Rising, The Wolf's Hour, Interview with the Vampire, Frankenstein, etc..

Nevertheless, I hope I can point you to at least one monster novel that you weren't aware of and could possibly enjoy! Let’s get started.

A funny idea comes to mind when thinking of female monsters. Well actually, the idea is more about the reverse of that. I kind of chuckle at the idea of how a male monster has to be justified with a glamour, mind control, magical powers of persuasion. That's how they get their female prey back to their lair. But women monsters? Nah, they don't need any of that because us men will walk right into their traps smiling the whole way, until it's too late.

I don't really think I can say it better than Christy Aldridge does on page 135…

Book Review: Butchers by Todd Sullivan

Butchers drops you into a fully developed vampiric society in South Korea. For me, it felt like there is a grander world here, but I was only getting the opportunity to experience a very small part of it. This novella represents a single story from this vast world. This was my first experience with Todd, I enjoyed his style and flare for story-telling.

Yes, I am on record stating that I am not a big fan of vampire fiction. That being said, the novella format, the quick chapters, Todd's talent, and the freshness of a story in South Korea kept me enthralled.
